{"id":365,"date":"2010-09-17T08:54:21","date_gmt":"2010-09-17T12:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/clarkcreations.net\/blog\/?p=365"},"modified":"2011-01-01T18:58:31","modified_gmt":"2011-01-02T00:58:31","slug":"fried-okra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clarkcreations.net\/blog\/fried-okra\/","title":{"rendered":"Fried Okra"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Well this situation started out as really annoying.\u00a0 We planted 5 okra plants because Sam likes it.\u00a0 Then 2 of them died.\u00a0 That leaves us with 3 plants.\u00a0 They are producing but so far not that much.\u00a0 Mind you the plants are as tall as I am.\u00a0 Every time we go to the garden and have a few okra (which is almost every other day) Kerry suggest &#8220;WE&#8221; fry them and see if they are good.\u00a0 &#8220;WE&#8221; is such a great term, it means me preparing them and cleaning up the mess.\u00a0 Now I have avoided this by saying there isn&#8217;t enough and by pickling them because Kim said she&#8217;d eat anything pickled.\u00a0 After our trip out to the garden\u00a0and return to the house with 11.6 lbs of goodies I am trying to decide what all needs pickled.\u00a0 We clearly have a large amount of pickles.\u00a0 Guess who suggest\u00a0frying the hand full of okra? After working on the pickles I decied\u00a0that \u00a0I am annoyed, \u00a0it&#8217;s lunch time and the house work is done so I am going to fry these stupid things just to get it over with.\u00a0 I am at this point realizing that this is why I don&#8217;t have children, I already have the mentality of a 6 yr old pestering me.\u00a0 But after all is said and done, I don&#8217;t actually hate okra and my breading ROCKS!!!<\/p>\n<p>I started by cutting my okra, and yes they are slimy little things.\u00a0 I put them in a dish and covered with the beaten egg mixture.\u00a0(no one needs to see egg mixture)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"_IGP7106 by tclarkcreations, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/photos_by_tammy\/4966369232\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4147\/4966369232_c7145de400.jpg\" alt=\"_IGP7106\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While that soaks (5-10 minutes) I assemble the dry ingredients and pour oil into the bottom of a heavy frying pan (I prefer the tall sided one to keep the grease inside and off the stove top).\u00a0 Once my oil was hot I tossed the egg covered okra in the flour mix and gracefully place into the hot oil.\u00a0 Fry until golden brown, place on paper towel to drain and SALT!\u00a0 ENJOY!!!<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"_IGP7055a by tclarkcreations, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/photos_by_tammy\/4847040071\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4084\/4847040071_1857213a88.jpg\" alt=\"_IGP7055a\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Ingredients<\/h2>\n<p>1\/2 c\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Flour<br \/>\n1\/2 c\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Corn Meal<br \/>\n1 t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 house seasoning (salt, pepper, garlic powder)<br \/>\n1\/4 t\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 cayenne pepper (or to taste)<br \/>\n1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 egg beaten (add a splash of milk, cream or 1\/2 and 1\/2)<br \/>\n~10\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0okra sliced<br \/>\nMore salt for after frying.\u00a0<br \/>\nOil for frying<\/p>\n<p>Since starting this post I have made 2 other batches of the fried goodness.\u00a0 What I have discovered is that the longer you let the okra sit in the beaten egg mixture the better it sticks.\u00a0 I am sure that is has something to do with the slim that comes out of the little veggie but hey I won&#8217;t complain.\u00a0 By they way I have also tried this on onions and tonight zucchini.\u00a0 I have also blanched and froze several bags of cut okra to try over the winter.<\/p>\n<h2>Update 1\/1\/2011<\/h2>\n<p>Today we pulled a bag of okra from the freezer.\u00a0 It was good, but certainly not as good as fresh.\u00a0 Kerry did say it was still better and less mushy than thee stuff served in restaurants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> Well this situation started out as really annoying.
