Proud and disappointed

Well weekend or so ago while I was in Atlanta for #SQLSAT220 phones started buzzing and things got weird. Saturday at some point in time in the afternoon PASS started mass emailing all the people who had submitted sessions for Summit 2013. Some 800 sessions were submitted with only 190 actually being picked. That makes the odds pretty tough and that doesn’t give any consideration for popular topics that probably get many submissions.

What I might know about this. Well I have heard that this year all the abstracts were rated blind and have even heard that people who’s abstract included their name had that redacted. WOW that seems like . . . → Read More: Proud and disappointed

#MSTECHED Day 1- the drive

Well most trips we take end up with me being irritated at Kerry because he’s sitting around on his butt while I am running around like a fool trying to get things ready. We should not assume this time would be any different. I had all my items packed and ready on Saturday leaving me just the cooler and food to pack up on Sunday. Of course he’s discovered a computer issue at home and spends nearly an hour working on it, and it’s still isn’t fixed. (Hopefully I can find someone here to talk about Exchange with.) In that time I got the car completely loaded and ready to . . . → Read More: #MSTECHED Day 1- the drive

SAY WHAT? TechEd?!

You won’t believe this, heck a few weeks ago either would I. Oh sorry that seems like a set up that might be disappointing once I tell you what I have to say. I am going to TechEd 2013 in New Orleans and will be representing PASS.

I bet you are wondering how this happened? Well apparently someone cancelled and someone else was already going on the company dime. So I was asked if I wanted to go. And well after a few discussions Kerry said “just book it and we have the rest of the year to pay for it”. Now here is where the story gets even stranger . . . → Read More: SAY WHAT? TechEd?!

and the home of the BRAVES!

Yup Atlanta that is. Last weekend was #SQLSAT220 or #SQLSATATL.

Atlanta is a 4 hour drive from here so we were hopeful in getting their early in the evening. But much like every trip nothing starts out on time (KLT’s fault I am sure) and the drive took a bit longer as we hit crummy traffic. We ate a nice big steak lunch, while I know that seems like a lot the plan was we’d not eat dinner and it is kind of a tradition to eat a steak meal before leaving on a trip if departure time permits. We borrowed my neighbors GIANT vehicle (Infinity QX56), man that is . . . → Read More: and the home of the BRAVES!

Well I guess I forgot to tell you

You know it was just the other day that I had a conversation with a friend about tooting your own horn. We discussed how uncomfortable that made us both feel and how we would prefer that we didn’t have to be involved but that it was okay if someone else did the tooting. Hmm that takes on a new meaning if read out of context. In order for some things to in my immediate future to make more sense I need to take a moment, feel uncomfortable and toot my horn.

Not too long ago I accepted a volunteer position with PASS. I will be serving as the Mid Atlantic . . . → Read More: Well I guess I forgot to tell you

SQL Community and Family

By now you should know how this writing challenge works, but in light of all the first timers who attended #summit12 I think I will give you a brief run down. The idea is to help people come up with reasons to write. Sometimes it is just hard to keep in the swing of things. T-SQL Tuesday was developed as a topic for everyone to write about and guess what it’s due on the second Tuesday of the month. This month Chris Yates (@YatesSQL | Blog) has asked us a very personal question “SQL Community / What Does the Community Mean To You?”

For me #sqlcommunity is different from #sqlfamily. . . . → Read More: SQL Community and Family

NEW Community Zone for #summit

This note is coming to you from the EXIT row of a Southwest 737 -700 series bound for SEA. I am not the best flyer(sometimes I need a pill or drink to actually get me on the plane) but I have educated myself and today was a bit of stress for me. Thunderstorm line coming in from the West and leaving late really didn’t help. Did I mention that was my direction of flight? It’s all good at this point as I am in the air and I have paid Southwest air $5 to have internets.

I want to tell you about the NEW Community Zone!!

This year there will . . . → Read More: NEW Community Zone for #summit

Count down to #summit – First Timer Info

Thursday and for me just 52 hours until I head to KBNA for my flight to Seattle. I know we are getting there a bit early but we got married at Summit last year (#sqlwedding) and wanted a few days to enjoy the city.

In these final hours I want to provide you with yet one more bulleted list, I really like bulleted list!

How to find people and stay connected? Twitter. If you haven’t gotten a twitter account yet now may be a good time. You’ll find people to follow really fast, most everyone who hands you a business card will have a twitter handle on it, most presenters . . . → Read More: Count down to #summit – First Timer Info

Just a week till we meet! First Timer Info for Tuesday.

It is for first time attendees only. I didn’t get one so I am not sure about any of the details, if you didn’t get the email or aren’t sure please let me know so I can get that resent to you. There is a blurb about it on the First Timer page.

Tuesday night I will be at the First Timer welcome a bit early to get my sign so we can finally meet. There will . . . → Read More: Just a week till we meet! First Timer Info for Tuesday.

A day of first..

Yesterday was quite a day of first. Before you read this just know that I am surprisingly ok.

Thursday September 20, 2012 might not be a day that I will remember forever. It technically wasn’t a huge day of events but it is something that I feel the need to write down and remind myself that it’s okay. On this day we’d load Summer (our Ford Edge) and head for Kalamazoo Michigan, stopping in Indiana to see my grandmother in the hospital.

Kerry got his first speeding ticket. That is right, his first. Now it’s not a big deal everyone gets a speeding ticket at some point in their life. . . . → Read More: A day of first..
