T-SQL Tuesday #129 – Time Capsule wrap-up

Let’s Build a Time Capsule – The wrap-up

Well, I don’t even know what to say, such great ideas and creativeness. The last couple of days I have internally struggled with, as Glenn wrote this ” human malware situation”. Reading all of these posts has made me smile.

Rob Farley gave us some reminiscing of dressing up for conferences like SQLBits, and how even saved a doughnut for later. But the thing he really wants to place in the capsule is a “creative collection of badge ribbons”. He’s certain that he needs help in making this collection. I am however convinced that his double OUTER APPLY (SELECT TOP (1)…)  is worthy of being placed in the capsule, by the time we get to see it the code will be a great relic.

Richard Swinbank is placing in our time capsule some wonderful things; newspaper, code, a collection of tweets from #SQLFamily, and most importantly a recipe for a chocolate old fashioned that no one ever told me existed. He’s right, spend any time reading tweets tagged with #SQLFamily and you will learn a lot about our community and just how lucky we are to have each other.

Kevin Chant, seriously were you in my heart when I came up with this idea? He’s wanting a list of every single member of the SQL community past and present. Listing one thing they have done outside of the SQL community they would like to be remembered for. His addition to the time capsule is beautiful and sincere.

Deborah Melkin put so much time and thought into her time capsule post, she includes pictures and explanations. Giving us a look at how she’s dealing with our new normal through music, her hangouts, and her technology that allows her to the opportunity to do all of these things while we stay #saferathome.

Hugo Kornelis isn’t a “things” kind of guy and would like instead to share with you some of his experiences. First up is advice on leading the world, proper leaders are those who accept the responsibility out of necessity until better candidates come along. That is pretty deep. He’s also telling us to just drink life to the fullest. Have fun, but take responsibility as well.  PS – I think Hugo is worth knowing of so go read his time capsule post!

Michelle Haarhues shares with us her favorite Pass Summit experiences that include a 5 am run and Top Pot Doughnuts. She’s going to miss it this year but has planned a little outing for herself.

Tracy Boggiano says code would be outdated and #SQLFamily that’s been a part of her life would be a giant book, instead, she’s leaving in our time capsule photos of all the foster kids she’s advocated for and that’s 18 years worth. Tracy does a lot of volunteering so if you are looking for opportunities she’s got a few post linked that can help you find out more.

Ken Fisher gives us a quick recap of his recent health scare, this is to bring light to the outpouring of help and support from #SQLFamily in is post “what comes around goes around“. “I guess what I’m trying to say is be kind, be nice, be polite, and above all else care about each other. You never know when you’ll need it back.”

Todd Kleinhans talks about nostalgia and has submitted one of his favorite songs in his post “Diamonds and Rust \m/-_-\m/“. He also gets all techy and wants you to know about Rosetta Disk for data archiving. I didn’t know about #SQLMemorial which is a good thing to add, he’s also suggesting some #SQLHSPics and some SQL Documentation.

Jason Brimhall brings up a huge social and personal movement of self-awareness, unconscious bias. This is a great read and probably will be for years to come. What I think will be interesting is in the future have we learned or grown from this as a society.

Glenn Berry tells us that because of the current human malware situation work from home may be the new normal or at least for a bit longer. He shares two key things to consider in his time capsule post; good technology and comfort.

Steve Jones shares memories of 2020, talks about having a sabbatical, and even recommends that negotiating for this is worth it. At the end of his time capsule post, he speaks of the importance of social connection and togetherness. Something I think all of us are missing.
